Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Tim Ayyy asked:

Obv. i’m an avid Photographer otherwise i wouldn’t be buying either one. i already have some EOS Lenses but just wanted to get the general opinion.
i actually have the 70-300mm IS lense along with the kit 18-55 but is it possible to even use that on a Nikon really? in that case i’m gonna yell at the Schmuk at B&H tomorrow but either way i think that i’m gonna go with the Canon thanks guys!

I spent five months trying to decide between them, and ultimately made what might seem like an arbitrary choice, to you, based on what my specific needs were, where my investment in lenses was and what sort of things I knew I was likely to shoot down the road. What are your needs?

They’re confoundingly similar cameras. By many accounts, image quality is too close to call. The D700 has what is generally accepted to be a superior AF mechanism. AI Servo focus is particularly good. Do you shoot moving subjects? Kids? Birds in flight? It can sustain higher FPS in continuous shooting and it’s fully weather sealed. It’s also bigger and heavier and its implementation of LiveView sucks (comparatively speaking, that is).

The 5D II has insane resolution and of course the (unjustly) maligned video mode. The sensor is reportedly an updated version of the chip from Canon’s 1Ds III. It can take any lens the Nikon can with a simple ring adapter. By Canon’s own admission, it’s not a “pro” body, and as such it isn’t weathersealed and the AF array sucks (comparatively speaking). AI Servo focus is particularly bad.

You pays your money and takes your choice. For what it’s worth, I don’t think I would have been less satisfied if I’d gone the other way. They’re both fine cameras. The differences between them are smaller than the differences between a full-frame DSLR and any crop.

    Good luck on your decision.

    You are in a dilemma.

    1) you already have some EOS lenses, but if they are EF-S lenses they will NOT work on the Canon 5D … they will damage the mirror.
    2) the low noise at high ISO settings on the Nikon D700 / D3 (same sensor and electronics) at this time is superior to any Canon (if you wait long enough, Canon should catch up)

    What to do?

Take a CF card with you into a store that sells both cameras. Using the same lens focal lengths, shoot at the cameras highest ISO’s and then take your card home and look at the results on your computers large monitor.

I suggest you shoot at 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 and 12,600 on each camera. Those shots will tell the tale

The reason the noise at high ISO will be lower on the Nikon is because the sensors are nearly twice the size of the Canon’s. That is because Canon has stuffed nearly twice the pixels on to the same real estate. 12 mp seems to be the sweet number for reducing noise on a full frame camera.

The 21 mp Canon and 24 mp Nikon sensors are more at home in studios or when shooting outdoors when enough light is NOT a problem. You choice will eventually come down to the subjects you shoot, not which camera is better … they are both EXCELLENT cameras

Which EOS lenses do you have?… I would only swap systems depending on my collection of glass. If I happened to own (for example) the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS and the 85mm f/1.2 L, then I would certainly buy the 5D II to accompany them. If I just happened to have the 18-55mm IS and 50mm f/1.8 then the choice would be more open as the D700 is a wonderful camera and you will not lose out on a lot of money by swapping systems.
